The "Multi-Repair System" for Liquid Crystal Color Filters Wins the Grand Prize at "2004 Advanced Display of the Year (ADY)"

The "multi-repair system" for liquid crystal color filters released recently by the NTN Corporation, jointly developed with the Takano Co., Ltd. has won the grand prize in the "Display Testing Equipment" Category at the "2004 Advanced Display of the Year (ADY)".

These prizes, awarded this year for the ninth time, are a system that selects 10 or so particularly superior products from among the flat panel display (FPD) related products released during the preceding year for the "Superior Product Prize" and also selects the single most superior product as the grand prize winner in each category ("display modules", "manufacturing equipment", "display testing equipment", "display materials and components").

NTN's "multi-repair system" was awarded the grand prize in the "display testing equipment" category at the ADY awards ceremony held on June 30 at the site of the "14th Flat Panel Display Manufacturing Technology Exhibition" (held at the Tokyo Big Site from June 30 through July 2).

The "multi-repair system" is a multi-function repair system that combines into one unit three functions indispensable for color filter repair: laser cutting (to repair black defects), ink coating (to eliminate white defects), and tape polishing (to fix particle defects). This repair system can handle large glass color filter substrates up to the 7th generation (1870x2200 mm) and contributes greatly to color filter productivity and quality improvement.

[Main functions]

1 Laser cutting function: Uses a second and third high-order harmonic YAG laser to repair black defects.
2 Ink coating function: Coats ink on white defects with the coating needle (patented).
3 Tape polishing function: Controls the polishing pressure while polishing particle defects to a uniform height (patented).
4 Height measurement function: Measures particle height
5 Review function: Uses a glass surface plate to emit reflected and transmitted light to make it possible to observe the state of defects.

The "multi-repair system" is also part of the main exhibit as a prize winning product in NTN's booth at this exhibition. In a video shown on a large-screen monitor, the narrator explains the unique superior features of this system.
