Development of “Small Clutch Integrated Pulley” for Passenger Cars

[ Same torque capacity as conventional type and compact/light weight design ]


NTN (hereafter, NTN) has developed a compact and light-weight “small clutch integrated pulley”, maintaining the same torque capacity as NTN's conventional product.

A clutch integrated pulley is primarily applied to the alternator for diesel engines with large amounts of torque fluctuation in order to reduce the fluctuation of belt tension for the purpose of belt life improvement and to protect against noise generated belt slip. In a gasoline engine, the fluctuation of belt tension tends to become larger due to the direct fuel injection and the reduction of idling engine speed for the fuel cost improvement. Accordingly, the demand for clutch integrated pulleys is expected to increase.

Following the recent demand for weight reduction of vehicles and the downsizing of engine space, the downsizing and weight reduction of engine auxiliaries is also required. Under this circumstance higher toque capacity, smaller size and lighter weight are required for the clutch integrated pulley.

With this new product, “small clutch integrated pulley”, the configurations of the bore and outer diameters of the shaft were reviewed and the design of the sprag for the sprag type clutch was optimized. The result of these improvements was that the pulley diameter was decreased by 7mm and the weight was reduced by 120g, while still maintaining the same torque capacity as the conventional product.

NTN is promoting this new product for diesel and gasoline engines with low fuel consumption.
