Development of integrated sealed sensor hub bearing for driven wheels of passenger cars

[ Superior reliability by completely sealed sensor ]

NTN Corporation (hereafter NTN) has developed an integrated sealed sensor hub bearing for driven wheels in which the revolution sensor is integrated with the outer ring of the hub bearing and is completely sealed.

As for conventional hub bearings with revolution sensors for driven wheels, there have been cases that sensor probes and/or magnetizing encoders were damaged due to ingress of mud water or foreign material because the sensor was not sealed. As a countermeasure for these failures, shields were fitted to the outer rings of CVJ or labyrinth packing was used in the gap between the housing (knuckle) and CVJ outer ring. With this new product the seal is fitted at the outside of the sensor probe and the magnetizing encoder ring, so that the sensor is protected from ingress of foreign material. Thus the reliability is greatly improved.

With this product the core ring is assembled by press fitting it to the outer ring of the hub bearing after the sensor and the circular steel plate core are integrated into one piece. The sensor is located between the knuckle and the inner ring of the hub bearing and the sensor cable exits in circumferential direction. Therefore, neither machining a notch on the knuckle to prevent the interference of the sensor cable, nor machining and assembly to fix the sensor is required. And the air gap adjustment is also unnecessary because the sensor is integrated with the bearing.

NTN believes that the addition of the integrated sealed sensor hub bearing will help improve the reliability of cars.

< Features >

(1) Superior reliability · Prevents damage and corrosion of magnetizing encoder and sensor probe and adhesion of external magnetic material due to a completely sealed structure
(2) Compact design · Sensor is located between knuckle and inner ring of hub bearing
  · Sensor cable exits in a circumferential direction
(3) Improve work efficiency · Sensor fixing work and air gap adjustment are unnecessary
(4) Improve processing efficiency · Additional work to machine notch on knuckle as to prevent interference of sensor cable is unnecessary
